How to buy a Straight Razor
- Aug 03, 2016 -

  1. Check the quality of the steel. Catch the point of the blade under your thumbnail and let it quickly slip off. If there is a clear ring, you’ve got a blade with excellent purity and honing.

  2. Choose the right size. Most men swear by the 5/8″ straight razor, comparing it to a gentle angel running her hands over the contours of their face. Okay, they may not say that but we know they’re all thinking it. It’s easy to maneuver and does well on the angles of the jawline.

  3. Consider blade hollowness. If you examine the cross section of most modern straight razors, you’ll find that the blades are thick at the bottom and have two concave scoops leading to a point at the top. When people discuss how “hollowed” a blade is, they’re referring to how dramatic these scoops are. A “full hollow” straight razor is light and easy to maneuver around the face, while a “wedge” razor has no hollowing and is more tolerant of poor shaving technique. As a beginner, you’ll most likely want to compromise with a blade that is partially hollowed.
